During the installation of the EA888 timing side cover, there will be oil leakage. We all need to pay attention to those aspects. Next, let's take a look.
Causes of oil leakage on the timing side cover of Volkswagen EA888
1. Oil leakage at the edge of the side cover
This type of oil leakage is caused by uneven application of glue during installation (there are some grooves around the cover, and sealant needs to be used to evenly apply these grooves). Another possibility is that when tightening the bolts, the procedure agreed by the OEM is not followed, resulting in uneven tightening force of each bolt, and thus uneven sealing force.
2. Oil leakage at the oil seal
The EA888 curved front oil seal uses PTFE as the sealing lip, which is currently the best material for oil seals. However, there are many precautions during the assembly process, otherwise it is very easy to cause oil leakage due to improper installation.
Now we will introduce to you how to correctly install the timing side cover.
Main points for installing the side cover of the main chamber
1.First, clean the crankshaft front cover installation area;
2.Wipe off oil and other stains;
3.Ensure the seal is in good condition;
4.The most important point: when installing the PTFE oil seal, the crankshaft must be dry and free of oil, grease and other impurities;
5.In order to better exert the performance of the PTFE oil seal, we strongly recommend that you do not start the vehicle immediately after installing the front cover. You can use it normally after 4 hours.
Use sealant and apply it only in the locations shown in the picture:
Tighten the cover bolts in the order shown in the figure, and control the bolt torque to 8 Nm. After hearing a click, use the torque angle to rotate it another 45°.
